Sparsh helps little Smita

Sparsh- Helps Families and Children with Disabilities

This month Shanti International would like to share some of the work that doctors and specialists from Sparsh carry out, as they can greatly affect local families and children. The Sparsh team were asked by the concerned parents of daughter Smita, who has severe Cerebal Palsy to travel to their home.

The living conditions of the family are poor as both parents are out at work every day leaving Smita to the care of her Grandparents. Smita’s health is deteriorating and has another disability affecting her body causing severe physical immobility. All her limbs are in a flexed position and she cannot sit, roll, or communicate without support. After assessing Smita’s abilities, Sparsh were able to identify her needs and provide a plan with the family for her care at home. They advised that the Grandparents travel to the Sparsh Centre so they could learn how to ease her disabilities and teach Smita basic child developments such as, proper positioning, being outside and exposed to her environment, toileting, feeding, and communication.

Sparsh Assessing Smita

The meeting provided a life changing opportunity for Smita and her family as they visited the centre and were given special equipment such as chairs and tables that allow Smita to sit upright. They were also given literature and leaflets to help them gain a better understanding of Smita’s condition. We wish the family all the success in preventing Smita’s condition from deteriorating any further.

About Shanti-International-Charity

Shanti International is an international charity dedicated to empowering under-privileged people and improving their economic and social well-being. A simple ethos of giving others what we take for given underpins all our projects whether we are providing education, support or medication for preventable diseases. In a fair society, everyone should be able to live a life where opportunities are available for them to improve their situation. Shanti International envisions a world where each individual has basic human rights, the freedom, confidence and community support to address any social problems and bring about change. At the heart of any help we provide for the vulnerable, is the aim of helping individuals take advantage of all the possible opportunities that exist for them, so that the most disadvantaged people can live an independent life. We are not limited by causes and strive to be wherever a helping hand is needed. From addressing the legitimate concerns of people and families living with HIV/AIDS and providing care and support services; to protecting young girls and women from crimes like domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labour and other forms of exploitation, Shanti International is there to take a stand.
